Why You Keep Relapsing (It’s Your Sleep)

Sobriety, addiction recovery, sleep, morning routine, meditation, willpower, discipline, and healthy habits all start with what you do the night before.

I believe one of the most important things we can do for sobriety, recovery, and performance is something most people overlook:

Prepare for tomorrow tonight.

Your day starts when you go to bed.

For me, that means getting enough sleep, reducing screen time before bed, keeping a consistent sleep schedule, and taking a few minutes to review the day I just lived.

What went well?

What did I struggle with?

What can I learn from it?

I don't believe a bad moment has to make the entire day a failure. If I can look at what happened, learn from it, and change my approach, I can still take something useful from that day.

Then comes the morning.

I wake up, meditate, make the bed, clean the room, move my body with a few push-ups, squats, and crunches, and review what I need to accomplish.

Nothing complicated.

The purpose is to bring some order to my physical environment, my mind, and my day before the outside world starts competing for my attention.

And for me, there is also a spiritual part of this routine.

My higher power is God. Making time for that relationship reminds me that I do not have to face everything by myself.

Recovery is not only about the moment you say no to an addiction.

It is also about building a life that makes it easier to keep making the next right decision.

Sleep well.

Prepare your mind.

Take care of your surroundings.

Move your body.

Review your day.

And remember:

Your day begins the night before.
