The Identity Shift That Ends Addiction
Addiction recovery, sobriety, mindset change, identity, goal setting, purpose, action steps, and healthy habits all come together in this simple GPA framework.
Hello folks, John DeMann here.
Today I want to talk about making real change in your life, especially if you have been addicted and you are now in recovery.
One of the most important things I believe is this: stop identifying with the thing you are no longer doing.
If you are not using, why keep calling yourself an addict?
What we focus on grows. What we give our attention to starts to shape who we become. So instead of focusing on the old identity, I want you to focus on the future you are creating.
That is where GPA comes in.
Goal.
Purpose.
Action.
First, define your goal as if it has already happened. For me, that sounds like: I am sober. I live drug-free.
Second, define your purpose clearly. Why does this matter? For me, the purpose was health, life, and not letting addiction destroy my body or my future.
Third, take consistent action. Physical wellness, mental discipline, meditation, memory, daily tasks, and honoring your higher power all become part of the structure that keeps you moving forward.
If you fall off one day, do not quit.
Get back on.
Read your goal, purpose, and action steps three times a day. Let them guide you. Let them remind you of who you are becoming.
Because change is not just about leaving something behind.
It is about stepping into the life you were meant to live.
